I continue to be astonished to the degree people, ordinary Americans, have been taught to hate one man. The steady drumbeat of media wrath about Trump has done it's work. Like our country's whole existence and purpose meets in a vanishing point aimed at blowing up one person. How much do they fear Donald Trump? How intellectually lazy, if you can use the word intellect, are people to go along with this? Help me out here. I'm staggered by it all.

Yes it is amazing, especially given how essentially mild his Presidency was. He’s not done any of the things that they have done to him.

Re: "The Founders of the USA of course made arbitrary fines and punishments as well as taxation without representation the basis of their justification in rebelling against George III."

Don't forget our Bill of Rights, the VIIIth Amendment of which reads:

"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

Yes precisely. You’ve supplied the detail I missed. I was thinking of it, but lazily did not include the quote 😉

Yes, Sundance is generally good and often supplies needed detail. It’s been obvious for a long time to be fair though that the FBI raid was a recovery raid, aimed at getting back something Trump had on them. I’m talking less about the details that prove it’s an illegitimate process (itself illegal, to cover or do illegal things) and more about how you discuss or react without lending it legitimacy.

This was another good one from CTH, that explains what happened behind the scenes on J6... which of course is so much apart of the rest of this mess.

Yes that one is very good, I’ve previously read it but thanks for the timely reminder. 😀

"But like Trump attending those court sessions and being silent when those crooked judges command it, we lend the whole thing an air of unearned legitimacy. Even as we criticize it, we go into the details of the cases in ways which suggest there is something there to answer, or that our role is to disprove what is being claimed."

Bingo.

It's what all along, I've plaintively asked (though less articulately). Like the battered wife who won't leave her violent spouse, our side infuriatingly plays underdog to the bullies' disgusting games.

Ultimately this air of legitimacy comes not just from us, but from the failure of the Republican Party to respond in ways that end selective political prosecutions. If the Republicans did the same thing to the Democrats, it would stop.

Yes, I had meant "our side" to mean those purportedly representing the rest of us.

I keep wondering why the Supreme Court allows this to continue. I wonder when this will stop just being the patently unfair series of events that most fair people acknowledge it is, even as they shrug and attend to their own business. A WashPost headline today happily noted the trials are keeping Trump off the campaign trail; the real goal of the harassment is election interference. Maybe that's why the institutions that should stop this allow it to continue.

It is, although I also think they would love to actually imprison him and they do have a chance at that. The SC have been utterly useless, just as they were in 2020. I assume they will either kick the immunity stuff back to lower courts or make a worthless non ruling on it that doesn't help. I hope they prove me wrong but even when objecting they talk about 'what id a future President is persecuted'...hello, its happening NOW.

Daniel, everything you said is accurate and laid out so well.

I'm older than you and have seen a lot but his is far beyond what I could have imagined. I watched the Nixon takedown and was appalled. That "lawfare" didn't hold a candle to this.

If their aim is to destroy the nation; they may just accomplish it. The words "be careful what you wish for" come to mind. 😕
